This game permanently broke my perspective on open world survival craft games. the bar is now higher than everything else now.

If you want a game that is visibly a labor of love, with mechanics and design that will feel modern and retro at once, as well as a really rewarding grind progression with carefully thought-out project zomboid or Rune scape stylish skill system, this is it. It is perfect for friend group or duo, some go out exploring for resources, other focus on cooking, crafting and base building. Worth the price in my opinion, no item in this game is useless, every component has multiple crafting purposes for it. Replayability potential is massive for this game, like different base location and character builds.

Easy example of gamers-for-gamers developer behaviour. For example if you die, the bag with your leftover items doesn't spawn right where you died (If you were accidently jump in void or places you shouldn't be), but at the nearest easily accessible spot on the map, as if certain areas of the game were excluded from death bag spawn. After returning nearly year leter the newest dark energy update, the content we have been provided with is absolutely massive, at least 15 to 25 more hours of gameplay to fully take on the new maps and items. developers keep adding quality of life items that are commonly requested. And very good example is the little updates that make the world more interesting and many more things to do and it's all for free. There is dlc's but not all of it and that is big green flag for me.

Every once in awhile there comes a game you wish you had paid full price for it and had gotten it as it came out. Ladies and gentlemen this is that that game. If you loved half life but wanted more survival element to it this is your game. A rare gem in the modern fandom of well written and good game play. The only negative of this game is that it didn't come from valve itself. A smaller negative is you will sink hours into it but you won't miss those hours.

I hate to say it, but this was not an enjoyable gaming experience. I played with 2 others and I personally would have quit long before it ended if not for my obligation to my fellow gamers.

The "feel" is sluggish. Something about the controls and visuals actually made my head hurt some days.

The exploration is dizzyingly complex.

The crafting, while impressive in scope, requires hard to obtain materials or items multiple levels deep to make or repair what you need. The complex map makes this a frustrating grind.

Whenever you think you've discovered a secret room or chest, it's a big nothing.

You never get the sense of having made a large step in progress or power. The difficulty in crafting new items makes you not even want to experiment with new items because you'd rather save the materials for something you might need.

The skill tree achievements are so weak, it never feels like it was worth focusing on any particular trait.

The time effects of hunger, tiredness, etc. just add to the feeling of frustration and half-way through we just started ignoring the de-buffs and would kill ourselves rather than trying to find food/water/bathroom.

Not much about the game that I can say is good, except maybe for the impressive scope and depth...and impressive number of times the journey left me disappointed.

I've managed to beat, and 100%, this game out of spite. The only reason why I tried it is cause of the VotV collab, which was just "Look at this thing that came from the (((game)))" key-jangling action.
Didn't feel like scientist at all, but a psychotic kleptomaniac, taking everything and anything that isn't nailed down and making doodads and stupid contraptions that just "scientifically (magically)" works.

Theres not enough and I want more
